Iceland is known as the “Land of Fire and Ice” for a reason. The red in Iceland’s flag symbolizes volcanic fires. Its magnificent volcanos, hot springs, lava fields and craters that dot the country, create a spectacular opportunity to experience the planet in a perpetual state of creation. Snæfellsjökull is perhaps Iceland’s most famous volcano, having inspired artists, poets, and writers for centuries.
Iceland is known as the “Land of Fire and Ice” for a reason. The red in Iceland’s flag symbolizes volcanic fires.
Why does Iceland have so many volcanoes? It sits on top of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is part of the longest mountain range in the world and includes a crack on the ocean floor that starts in the Arctic Ocean and ends at the southern tip of Africa! Some of the mountains are underwater, while others break the ocean surface that includes the Azores Islands, Ascension Island, St. Helena Island and Tristan de Cunha Island, to name just a few. The volcanoes are created by the earth’s North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly moving away from each other and releasing pressure, along with lava. The result: new earth is created as the lava cools.
Another benefit of Iceland’s volcanic activity? More than 90% of housing is heated by natural geothermal heat, one of the cleanest energy sources available
