Formed 5,000 years ago during a particularly active volcanic period in Iceland, they are located in the Leitahraun lava field, the Rauðhólar or red hills seem exceptionally vibrant in sunlight. Continue driving approximately 18 km (11 miles) outside of Reykjavik, and you’ll find yourself in the Heiðmörk nature reserve, where more than four million trees have been planted since the 1950s.
