The vibrant purple of the Icelandic lupine is known the world over. Funny thing is, the lupine isn’t native to Iceland. It was brought from Alaska and British Columbia in the mid-1940s to help combat soil erosion caused by damage inflicted by World War II, early climate change and centuries of deforestation that started in the Viking era. Today, the lupine, or “lulu” is the most prosperous plant in Iceland, and not without controversy, as it spreads into areas with delicate ecosystems.

There are Facebook groups dedicated to supporting these beautiful flowers, calling out its benefits, particularly as a reforestation support system. As the trees grow, the lupine will retreat to where it’s needed most.
