Shade Inspo

The Iles Purpuraires are a set of islands just off the shores of Essaouira, on the west coast of Morocco. Known for its abundant sea life, a special kind of sea snail (the murex mollusk) secretes the ancient world’s most sought-after dye. The particular shade of Royal purple became more vibrant with age rather than fading.

First believed to be used in 1570 BC by the Phoenicians, the dye was an extremely valuable status symbol due to the intense labor required and thousands of snails needed, thus the reference as “royal purple”.

...(the murex mollusk) secretes the ancient world’s most sought-after dye. The particular shade of Royal purple became more vibrant with age rather than fading.

Today, purple is a prized shade in many Moroccan textiles, including the country’s world-famous rugs. Today, the Iles Purpuraires is off-limits to people, being designated as a breeding sanctuary for the Eleonora falcon and other birds. Today, the color is so unique, that it can only be seen in its true form by the naked eye… it cannot be accurately reproduced on smartphones, computers or tablet screens.
